The frame of a painting has the power to alter the viewer’s perception of a work of art. Take the Mona Lisa, for example. If it were mounted in an outrageously ostentatious frame, the painting itself might seem overpowered. The frame would become the focal point, more than the portrait itself. But the frame is never the most memorable part of a work. Could you picture the Mona Lisa when I mentioned it? Now, could you imagine her frame?
This work seeks to acknowledge the frame as both a curator and an art piece. As Else progresses from left to right, the central image is lost, overtaken by the frame meant to support it. The subject and its boundary collapse into one, transforming into something Else.
